19 - Missing

Ember’s eyes were blurry with tears as she raced up the path, running with all her strength toward Glider Leap. Growly! Merridy was close behind her, and she could see Farren and Growly’s mother, Edolie, far up ahead, with Ash running beside them. There were others coming up the mountain, too, members of the Rescue Committee and many of the Cubs and Young Bears who were skilled at flying.

Ember wiped her eyes as she ran, her ears filled with the sound of her pounding heart and her panting and sniffles. Growly! How could he be missing?

Merridy had told her of the first time she and Growly had met. “You could barely even crawl; you’d only been with me a few days. I sat you on the rug at Growly’s place, and when he saw you he squealed with delight and waved his little arms in the air. He waved so hard he fell right over, and then he cried because he was stuck.” Ember had giggled.

“Well, Edolie picked him up and carried him over to you. When she put him down on the rug he threw his little arms around you and you both toppled over, giggling.”

Now, as Ember raced up the mountain, memories flooded into her mind. The first thing she could remember of Growly was sitting next to him in the sandpit as a warm, summer breeze ruffled the fur around her ears. Growly had put a paw-full of sand right on his head, and he had chuckled like it was the best joke ever. They were both still crawling at that time. She could remember scooting around with him on the floor of the library while Merridy dusted the rows of books. And there were birthdays and picnics and reading times and feasts. So many wonderful memories. How could he be missing?

“We’ll find him, Ember.”

Ember blinked and glanced over to see Skye coming up next to her on the path. She had her flight cap tied tight and was buttoning up her flight coat as she ran. Ember couldn’t say anything. She felt too close to tears, but she nodded gratefully to her friend, and they both ran harder as they came to the stairs below Glider Leap.

Gliders were already beginning to launch, one after another while bears shouted from the landing platform. As the pilots lifted off, they circled up into the sky, flying in a tight formation and then zooming out over the Backlands toward the mountain valleys. Farren had given the orders as soon as he arrived on the platform: two gliders for each valley, search on the ground through the night, signal if help is needed. Many of the Young Bears were ready to go, having waited up on the Leap while Ash went to find Farren. Ember hurried up the steps, her long dress wrapping around her legs in the strong, mountain breeze. She had worn it especially for the boy Cubs' return—for Growly’s homecoming. She sniffed back a tear and wiped her eyes with her long sleeve.
